How relevant is stratification in understanding crime from a sociological perspective?
If you mean to imply that based on your social class you more or less likely to commit crimes, then I have some things I wish to throw out there for debate and consideration. First of all, people of different status may commit different "kinds" of crimes, but people of all status commit crimes. An aristocrate may not rob a 7-11 but may embezzle from his own company or cheat on his taxes, still basically stealing money. He may not gun down a rival in a drive by shooting, but he might hire a hit man on a business rival or a cheating wife. Also we might think about whether the environment we are raised in is an influence and to what extent. If this was the only influence then only lower class people raised in bad environments would commit crimes. This we know is not true. In fact a good number of these people turn out to be very productive members of society. I also would like to consider genetics in the relevancy mix. Look at the examples for instance where siblings (especially twins where there is no social difference in the family) turn out completely different. I think a good look at the prison population is in order. What is the one commonality amongst male prisoners? Abscence of a father. That is an avenue to be explored and seems like not too many (except for the extreme right) care to go there. If this theory holds water then why not do something to bring the issue to the surface and try to educate people on the value of a two parent intact family who overcomes their selfish immaturaty to bring up productive, well adjusted members of society? The relevancy of stratification in understanding crime might need a little study in and of itself and why the question was posed that way to begin with is very telling. I mean to say that asking that way is suggestive. I may not have offered an answer here but I didn't intend to. I merely hoped to offer some food for thought.

crime normally is committed by unsatisfied pple who has a thing against the world. they feel society has short changed them or let them down. Hence, the desire to unleash their anger against the vast innocents. With stratification, we have class structures. individual opportunities are shaped by a society class structure, with sharply unequal resources and life chances. Many poeple in the lower class structure are marginalized by the elites, in the pursue of their own goals at the expenses of others. hence it may lead to the resentment caused by the marginalized and thus deviate from the norm and crime may be committed as a result.

Crime is a form of social deviance. Perhaps u shld study Merton's theory of structural strain, the conflict between culturally induced desires and the structure of opportunity. can try to do a little case study to illustrate.

Reply:Is observation your preferred (and best) method of research?

In order to remain objective it would be best if you had permission to use a video camera - you would then be able to take time to do your analysis on the actual events taking place rather than having to rely on memory or notes taken at the time.

A tape recorder is ok - ish, but a video would definitely be better as you would have a permanent record of what was taking place. You would then be able to transcript any dialogue taking place.

You didn't say what your field of research was, if it involves children - for teacher training etc - then you probably have an enhanced CRB, but you would still require permission because of ethical considerations.

You might be better off doing a combination of observation and interviewing. This has the advantage of giving you a two-pronged approach and the ability to compare what people say with what they actually do. However get some help from your tutor - it's what they get paid for, they've been through the process themselves and know the advantages and drawbacks of all types of research methodology. I'm doing research methods in experimental psychology and I'm just not interested in it. I need the course though. I need to develop a research project and I can't think of one. Something needs to be consistent, manipulated and have a measurable outcome. Like, thinking through a specific task improves after listening to Beethoven. Task remains consistent and participants listen to Beethoven and some to other music and some in silence. Music changes. But that's out of the text...I need something easy a lay person can do.

Hi - for a small research project in college, i gave people a list of words - some abstract and some that were concrete and had them study them for 3 minutes. Then, i had them write down as many as they could remember. The hypothesis is that people recall words/information better if it is concrete (table, chair, monkey) as opposed to abstract (large, fast, busy). Lots of research on it. Lots of implications, too. It's out of control, so relevant.

Easier would be give a test of some nature to kids not diag'ed with ADD, kids that are and are on drugs for it, kids that are and take no drugs and measure the difference. You could do the same for the teens looking for a correlation between activeness and reading comprehension, for instance.

You can easily learn about value vs. growth by going to any full service brokerage company and requesting brochures on that topic. You can also contact mutual funds that sell both value funds and growth funds; by ordering the prospectus of each (always free), you can read the "fine print" on what really makes one investment a value investment while another investments makes a growth investment. I'll briefly summarize for you... growth investments tend to be ideas that are showing a great deal of promise down the road to do well (think of them as plants... add water... watch the growth as time goes on). A value investment is quite different... it's an idea that seems to be at a current bargain price (think of it as poinsettias for sale after Christmas... it's a beautiful flower, but no one really wants it right now). To conduct a survey, why not directly contact stockbrokers and stock analysts and ask questions? Most will take out some time to help you work on your MBA project. Good luck.

This is for a sociology class called research methods. We are to develop our own topic but I am having trouble finding a good topic for research. I failed this class last year waiting to long and then developing a bad question that I found later not to work out. Last semester I did how walmart contributes to poverty in communities. I have been following the washington post "Being a black man in America" and would love to do something with that but am having problems coming up w a question for that too! This proposal is due next tuesday and I have already been working on this since yesterday. What would a good question to kick off the research writing process?

I have to present a research proposal about this, and i'm totally lost :( I can write the proposal and justifications and research instrument stuff, I just can't come up with the actual question I wan't to ask, or how it's best to do it. We've been told it's got to include some qualitative research methods, but I'm just *so* lost. I can't get my head around it - i'm just getting more and more confused. How am I supposed to get an accurate measurement of fear of crime without using a closed question? Like, I could ask people to rate on a scale of 1-5 how afraid they are of burglary, and it's a scale I can work with and get results from, but with qualitative research, how can I do this and get a measure accross area's with and without Neighbourhood watch? Please help me, I don't even care if I have to change my methods or even start all over, I just need some serious guidance here!

i think you would have to do a questionnaire with questions like does your area have neighbourhood watch?(you would need to get a group of people who do and a group who dont to compare) then more questions like are you afraid of burglary like you said but even if it is yes and no answers its still qualitative data isnt it?it would be quantitative data if you asked on a scale of 1-10 how scared are you?

There has been a lot of progress with adult stem cells but not much with embryonic. Should we funnel money for that research? Also, scientists discovered methods of creating embryonic stem cells without destroying human embryos...would you support this research?

well..if I supported funding embryonic stem cell research, than I would also support finding methods to create them. Afterall, you have to study them, to replicate them. And yes, I support it. It made great advances in 1996 before the reserach was gagged by RTL. I remember, because my brother became a quadriplegic that year. I also am informed enough to know that abortions are NOT used in this research, and I also know that Bush had his daughters through a fertility clinic..the places that they destroy these fetuses if they are not used..either by the parents or research. So, the man who vetoed the legislation, did so knowing that he was destroying his OWN fetuses..and denying people access to a better quality of life

And the embryonic stem cells we are talking about are leftover embryos from fertility treatments. If they are not used for research, they will just be flushed down the toilet. Adult stem cells seem vastly more promising at first glance. However, understand that we have worked with them for twice as long as embryonic stem cells. If there is a possibility that we may be able to cure people of debilitating diseases, I am all for it.

naturalistic observation only allows you to observe yourself and those immediately around you, as you can't easily watch people talk on cell phones and have accidents - it's not a large enough sample to be representative.

surveys run the risk of subject dishonesty, as self-reports almost always do, and again have the issue of generating a large enough sample to be statistically representative.

case study runs the risk of assuming that correlation equals causation (someone had an accident while talking on a cell phone, therefore the cell phone caused the accident... never you mind that the accident consisted of the guy hitting a moose while driving through Vermont in a snowstorm...)

experiment runs the risk of harming the subject (by causing someone a car accident!) and therefore is probably unethical.
Reply:best way to research is install a remote camera. and monitor a intersection. or you could investigate accidents and try to find out if their phone was in a conversation at the time of the crash.

What would be the relative strengths and weaknesses of this study? What ethical considerations must be taken into account while undertaking this study?

The experimental method is definitely out. It is not exactly ethical to feed someone alcohol and then provoke them to become violent. Naturalistic observation would be very difficult - how would one monitor the amount of alcohol consumed or how does one follow up with whether someone acted out or not?

I would think that case studies and perhaps survey research would be the most appropriate methods. The strengths would include ethical compliance, a viable research method and perhaps the compilation of verifiable data. The weaknesses would include distortion in self report often associated with surveys and the sometimes unreliability of case studies that may or may not be an accurate reflection of a particular subject. Case studies may also be clouded with the notion that the subject's circumstances may be too specialized and may not accurately reflect the general population.

Reply:There is no "right" answer. Your instructor (this is an intro to psych test question?) wants you to demonstrate you can define the methods by showing an understanding of the pros/cons of each method.

Make a short bullet list of worthy points from your textbook of each of the methods and you should be able to work through this question in your own words. As long as you back it up and stay consistent with your answer, it is grade A. I'd point you toward corelational research but answer what you feel most confident with if you really had to do it.

I have a seroius cockroach phobia and I live alone with my four Yorkie terriers and a small bird. I've done research on varoius types of home insecticides and have found none that are safe for use around children and animals. Please help!

i have never seen roach they only go most of the time where it is very dirty ,
Reply:The plastic roach hotels containing bait that is taken back to their "lair" that can be stuck inside cabinets and on high surfaces are the closest to safe as you will get assuming your dogs won't eat the roaches. It's not a good idea to put them on the floor my cats were attracted to them and wanted to chew on them. You have to clean really well not leave crumbs, seal all food, don't leave pet food out after they eat put it away in sealed containers. Check the rubber gasket seals to your microwave and fridge clean them well, Clean, Clean, Clean! Use liquid soap, keep the toothpaste capped. seal your toothbrush. You have to starve them. Overall personally, if you can I'd move and don't take any boxes from the house you'll take them with you shake out and wash all your clothes before you move. I have lived in a few apartments where there were infestations. They were there before I got there but I didn't know it. In one instance they inhabited and ruined a brand new answering machine. In 2 places I lived I didn't permit the landlord to fumigate. After one experience with roached. I fumigated before I moved in and cleaned the place thoroughly. I had to keep the kitchen spotless and the roaches stayed with my dirtier neighbors. In future places I learned to check the cabinets and floor board for dead roaches during the viewing of the apartment. If I saw any bugs I wouldn't rent the apartment. They usually miss at least a roach leg, droppings, or the eggs during cleaning of the apartment.I don't know how I ever put up with it when I did. I've attached some articles you might find helpful.
Reply:I researched this problem a few years back, my old apt had roaches (eeeew). Try this, it works:

Roaches HATE catnip. Get a bag of catnip, and soak it in hot water for a little bit (like making tea). Strain it, and then get an old spray bottle (from something used prior that is non-harmful to pets, of course, or a new one). Spray the 'tea' by the door, under the fridge, by anywhere that you think they enter. It completely worked for me, and they never came back!

PS the longer the catnip steeps, the better, but don't pour all of the mixture into the spray bottle, as the leaves of the catnip will clog it - you can also keep the 'tea' in the fridge and use a paper towel to apply it where you need it.

However, your question also made me think about contemporary 'diary' keeping in the area of anti social behaviour. I don't know if its any use to you but if there is a problem with anti social behaviour in an area, diary sheets are issued to those affected to detail dates, times and events so that the authorities can follow up on those incidents. This is a form of social science research using diaries but may not be what you are looking for. Interesting question. Many thanks...

If no, I'd do the double-blind control experiment thing using the "human zoo" approach - i.e., after having selected appropriate candidates and appropriate control candidates, having them stay in a "Big Brother" type of house, but without them knowing which rooms are monitored and which rooms are not. Depending on how I'm able to fenagle to fine-print, I may have a few rooms they think are monitored (but are not), and a few rooms they think aren't monitored (but are).

In addition to this would be multible MBTI-type personality surveys, the kind so extensively non-sensical to the untrained mind as to be virtually unfalsifiable by them, filled out by all participants. Using several different types should permit detection of those who are checking boxes at random and those who are seriously trying to fill them out. Those who are just doing random checkboxing, they can be told that their duplicity has been detected and asked to do it again, or perhaps - depending on the aim of the experiment - told that the results of their tests were phenomenally interesting and asked to repeat a few.

I love the "human zoo" approach, it is most impressive. :-)

For example, I was told by a psychologist that my daughter was "autistic" and needed "special school and therapy" (Read: lots of money). My sister (who is a teacher) visited my three year old daughter and told me that this was total bunk. Within 10 minutes, my sister had my daughter talking about the ducks they saw on TV. Then, on Thanksgiving, my sister bought my daughter little pilgrim people that my daughter played with all day and even had the little wax people kissing each other. At Christmas, my sister bought my daughter a flight attendant, plane and pilot set from playmobil. My daughter put absolutely all the dolls, animals, etc. in the plane to go to Italy with my family.

The well-paid "Psychologist" said that my daughter did not "do well" in creative play.

I said, "Thank you, doctor" and I promptly "mainstreamed" (his word, not mine) my daughter into another school. She is now doing GREAT at six, speaking two languages and telling me when I need to wear my glasses and need to "chill out."

So the recommendation is to study all the pathological liars that exist in professions who are trying to make more money.

I know my child is not the only case.

Relax, this is for a research project in a cultural class in a unit dealing with the occult. I don't want to hear any Christians coming in lecturing me about "Why would you give your soul to the Prince of Darkness?" or anything stupid like that. I just want an objective answer with lots of explanations, links, and diagrams if possible. Whatever anyone can provide from generally accepted rituals to cultural variation is appreciated.

Purely for the sake of speculation, The most common method of selling your soul per se would involve signing a 'Faustian Pact'. Trading your soul for a good or service named at the time of the contract signing. The contract would be signed with the blood of the mortal.

Again I reiterate this is speculation, I do not belive in demonic beings nor would I condone using a Faustian pact if they did exsist.

That is in consonance to the popular image of a God ( creator/ Positive Forces /Love) and anti-God (Satan/ Destroyer/ Dark forces/ Wrath) competing to win the soul of a mortal man cascaded down from time immemorial.- Which may not necessarily be true. Asking guidance from a Guardian Angel is the same activity as conjuring demons. Both serves the purpose of man. The ancient Egyptians, including Moses , have used special written symbols, and order of words and names of spiritual beings to make manifests the "essence" of either light beings or dark energies / sinister energies to follow their commands. Conjurer must have pure thoughts, and needs lots of practice, memorize a lot of powerful prayers. Both needs faith yet to a different purpose.

Once a Guardian Angel is summoned , you may forget to cancel your request of his/her manifesting and it will do you no harm. However, if after conjuring demons and you forget to sent him.her back in his/her own world, it could be disastrous as there could be disruptions in your life/ somebody elses / peace/ harmony/ manifestations of disease/ artificial plagues , including weather aberration , natural calalmities and effects may be global.

Suggest no one does this even by experiment -- suffice it to say that conjuring has always its effects even if it is not actually felt instantly.

But recommendations from professors in what are called "allied fields" are also valuable. As you learned online, at least 2 of 3 of your letters should be from professors in your intended field of specialization. A third from your sociology professor would be absolutely appropriate.

It would be very difficult to replicate Rosenhan's study since it was designed specifically to measure the effect of context on the diagnosis/retention of supposed mentally ill persons. That accounts for many of the findings that otherwise normal behaviors were interpreted in a fashion consistent with residence in such a facility, rather than as they might have been if the person exhibiting them were in some other location. The fact that the subjects had been admitted to a mental health facility is too germane to the research to remove it.
Reply:The study presupposes that a firm diagnosis of psychiatric illness can be made prior to institionalization since it presupposes any of the inpatients to be actually mentally ill. Yet the means by which pseudopatients gain entry to such institutions tends to dispute such a presupposition. How then are we to suppose that some "actually" mentally ill petients were mistakenly thought to be imposters? I would think a diagnosis of patients and pseudopatients on a one to one basis with several psychiatrists might reveal a more accurate indication of the extent to which labelling might affect diagnosis.

For my Media A-Level final exam I have been asked to conduct various research methods which will help me gain information on my research question, "Should fast food adverts be allowed to be advertised during young children's shows?” One of my research methods is this forum. So I would appreciate it if you can answer my question.

Not really. Just like with the old issue of toys being directly advertised at kids before the law forced advertising companies to become a bit more "subtle" in their appeals, these adverts not only enforce kids to behave like spoilt brats and pile pressure onto parents, but they also encourage them to ask for the wrong things.
Reply:I don't think it would even matter. I mean this america. it's a free country. Look at it this way. What if you worked for the fast food industry and you had to put food on the table for your family, and all of a sudden the gov. Doesn't let you advertise on tv.

Reply:Here in New Zealand we are placing an official ban on fast food/junk food advertising on TV during hours in which children are highly likely to be watching TV, eg. after school or in the mornings on weekends. This may become effective, although slightly, because media plays a big part in peoples' lives. If children are constantly exposed to advertisements showing people eating chips, lollies, soft drinks, etc. they think that it's perfectly OK. What they don't know is the reality, that you could eventually become obese, diabetic and become overweight, etc. and suffer from these consequences in later life.

So I'd say "No", it shouldn't be allowed that fast or junk food ads are on TV because the media influences peoples' lives in such a big way. And worse, if they put the ads on the exact time that they KNOW their target audience is watching....well we all know what will most likely happen.

Religion and politics is based on belief. Science, unlike religion, does not depend on belief but on healthy skepticism.

In the current global warming debate, Inquisition like behavior occurs to stifle the scientific process and bury views that do not agree with an "authority sanctioned" view point, with the Church replaced by the IPCC. Remember what happened to Galileo and Bruno? This has happened in the past and people were called heretics and in another age, witches. Today they may be called incorrectly "religious conservatives." The scientist being attacked could very well be an evironmentalist and liberal. It is unfair to label someone as something they are not just because they are trying to do honest research.

Science is based on the scientific method and not on consenses. For any hypothesis, there is going to be an antithesis. We went through the Enlightenment to free ourselves from the Church, we don't need a new Church of IPCC to replace it.

Reply:actually just because something that is stated is not accepted by scientific community, does not make it religion or fact. it is somewhere between the two.

what usually happens is scientists try to disprove a hypothesis with experimentation. when many of them do, it becomes acceptible to dismiss the hypothesis.

what you see currently is a large number of scientists that through their own knowledge, believe one way, and one loan scientist trying to debunk the majority. more often than not, it is pointed out that that loan scientists overlooked several key factors in order to debunk the hypothesis.

it happens all of the time, for both good and bad intentions, but sooner or later that scientist is discredited, and left telling people how he has a PhD, while he is putting their fries into their bag. but of course some do start selling books on how to survive a nuclear war.

close, but no cigar. the ipcc is the science. the stifling body are those paid by the oil industry. the science said that there was a 99% chance that global warming was caused by our burning of coal and oil. the energy industry interfered with the science, and made them reduce to 90%.

THAT IS ABSOLUTELY TRUE. Ask James Hansen. He disagreed with the "authority sanctioned view point" and was ordered not to give public interviews and not to attend conferences and give presentations.

There are 2 parts to the IPCC. The science section. And the political section. The science section describes the science. The political section tells the science section what they are allowed to publish.

If there is a "Dark Age of superstition" looming, it's the political response to the problem of global warming.

There is always someone or something thing that is going to be the down fall of man. And with these constant predictions there is always that certain group of people of buy into it totally. I'm awaiting the arrival of "The Skeptical Environmentalist" in the mail, by Bjorn Lomborg. He is an environmentalist and claims that global warming is not happening. I'm interested to see why he thinks so.

This is exactly the case with a lot of the issues at present. I have been long-devoted to the thought that agents like Greenpeace were there to do good. I also until recently felt a certain warm feeling towards Green lobbyists, such as Ralph Nader (reason why we now have seatbelts), but then again putting pressure on people (scientists, government officials) that are trying to do their job (govern and/or mandate by logcial or scientific basis) to the best of their ability.

I also believe that the number one reason why scientists get into the business of science is to help people, not for profits.

I am getting this overall feeling the more I read, though I would love to see why this person thinks this.

I have reading and reading on this topic more and more - it was true, I saw the Gore movie a few years back and thought that settled it: Global Warming is happening. I had other things on my mind, as is with most of the public - this is why I think the media should do a better job at reporting or uncovering the truth. I actually think there should be some sort of off-hand newscrew that likes to de-bunk popular beliefs and so forth. These are the kinds of people that will keep the Dark Ages at bay.

Mankind's role in the warming (or cooling) on Earth is religion to many people. I think scientists have a better chance of proving manbearpig is the missing link than we do that man has anything to do with global warming. From the list you've given I'd day Human Sexuality. Things that interest us are easier to study than things that are more obscure. Especially for a non-major.
Reply:I would agree that things that interest us are easier. Maybe you should go with that. I have my MA in Psych and have taken most of those classes and none of them were that easy. If you can, ask around and see who the professors are. I have found that a class may be easier just because of who is teaching it, not so much because of the topic. Also, what is your degree in? Maybe one class would be more helpful than others in your future career. One last suggestion, unless you are planning to be a researcher of some sort, avoid research methods in pscyh because although conducting experiments can be interesting, the material is very dry and possible too detailed for someone not interested in psych.

massaging the bruise

vinegar

alternating from hot to cold

arnica gel/lotion

vitamin K lotion

if you know which of them works and what works the best or if you know any other methods.

vitamin C works wonders to help heal and prevent (ORANGE JUICE!) and hot/cold.
Reply:Thinking about what a bruise is should give you your answer. A bruise is basically a cut on the inside. The blood pools and forms a bruise and depending on how much blood spilled depends on how long it will last. The cold/ hot works if you apply it as soon as you are hurt. The cold slows the bleeding and then the hot helps speed the recovery. You wouldn't keep alternating. No lotion will work. Messaging may lesson the look by spreading the blood. The bruise appears lighter. Vinegar is a great cleaning agent and has many benifits but removing bruises is not one of them.
Reply:An aspirin or equi every four hours if needed for pain. Clean the area and dry thoroughly. Medicate with antiseptic if needed. Get a good night's rest. Time and rest is best.

Gazpacho, watermelon out of the fridge, ice cream, salads (cold ones, but could be with meat anyway), any fresh vegetables, herbs, cucumbers in summer salads are great!

Cold mango on it's own or in salad is great.

Anything low maintenance is great - as if the summer is hot, you feel really lazy, therefore don't want to spend loads of time cooking, especially if more heat is involved in cooking
Reply:Some of the summer foods I like are watermelons and grilled steak. I also like T-Bones with A1 sause on them. Some desserts would be a Sundae, or ice cream with a lot of whip cream on top. I also like to eat Skittles when I'm playing my video games. Hope that helped.

Reply:I love fruit salad - watermelon, honeydew, cantalope, strawberries, grapes, kiwi, pineapple, and bananas. It is nice and refreshing on a hot day! I always make my own - it's cheaper that way and it keeps longer.

I also like corn on the cob - just because it's a symbol of summer.

This is for research methods but is there a person you know who becomes violent when they drink, or more violent when they drink? Feel free to elaborate if you wish.

When a person becomes aggitated and prone to agression reason and cognitive processing comes into play that allows them to rationalize the situation and either find a situational reason for the distressing act of another or to help them work through their thought process and avoid the agressive behavior, in effect preventing the thinking through of the consequences of their actions.

Alcohol inhibits this "Higher order thinking" and prevents them from working through these processes that would relieve their aggression prone behavior. Couple that wtih released inhibitions and an ability to blame their actions on something else "I was drunk so it doesn't count.' You remove all sense, reason and accountability leading to aggressive behavior.

Reply:Absolutely! Go to the Dept of Justice, statistics and look for the amount of crimes committed when people drink. It's rare that people will fight when they are straight. Get a bit of liquor in them and watch what happens.

Research is often conducted using the hourglass model. The hourglass model starts with a broad spectrum for research, focusing in on the required information through the methodology of the project (like the neck of the hourglass), then expands the research in the form of discussion and results.

Research process

Generally, research is understood to follow a certain structural process. Though step order may vary depending on the subject matter and researcher, the following steps are usually part of most formal research, both basic and applied:

* Analysis of data

* Conclusion, revising of hypothesis

A common misunderstanding is that by this method a hypothesis can be proven. Generally a hypothesis is used to make predictions that can be tested by observing the outcome of an experiment. If the outcome is inconsistent with the hypothesis, then the hypothesis is rejected. However, if the outcome is consistent with the hypothesis, the experiment is said to support the hypothesis. This careful language is used because researchers recognize that alternative hypotheses may also be consistent with the observations. In this sense, a hypothesis can never be proven, but rather only supported by surviving rounds of scientific testing and, eventually, becoming widely thought of as true (or better, predictive), but this is not the same as it having been proven.

A useful hypothesis allows prediction and within the accuracy of observation of the time, the prediction will be verified. As the accuracy of observation improves with time, the hypothesis may no longer provide an accurate prediction. In this case a new hypothesis will arise to challenge the old, and to the extent that the new hypothesis makes more accurate predictions than the old, the new will supplant it.

Publishing

Academic publishing describes a system that is necessary in order for academic scholars to peer review the work and make it available for a wider audience. The 'system', which is probably disorganised enough not to merit the title, varies widely by field, and is also always changing, if often slowly. Most academic work is published in journal article or book form. In publishing, STM publishing is an abbreviation for academic publications in science, technology, and medicine.

open questions are qualitative as they give an opinion.
Reply:Yes and No. It could be either depending on the how the questions are formulated and the people selected to respond. Test design is a critical topic. It is rarely done adequately.

In a questionnaire is done by mail, be prepared for a very low response rate- 10% would be excellent, 1% possible.

Responses from an internet questionnaire is likely to be garbage.

You could look at how to start a business or a franchise. Then ask yourself, what are the obstacles you are going to face and how can marketing and advertising help overcome these issues?
Reply:You could research things that have failed (TV shows, commercials, foods, clothing, any products). Then find a common reason why these things did not do well, and what could have been done to make them successful.

No, recently an article came up on the front page of Yahoo.com, some Harvard Med students found in their studies that violent video games do not provoke violence. Rather, violent kids in nature are attracted to the violent games.
Reply:Yes certainly. Video games is one of the powerful media especially when it comes to children. They spend hours playing video games. They imagine their favorite game character and try to imitate in real lives. This could be really dangerous causing harm to others. parents should be aware of the quality of games their children play

Reply:Yes. When my niece and nephews were visiting they found one of my Mortal Kombats for the 360. After watching the beginning movie one of them start imitating one of the moves. I went downstairs, a few minutes later I heard one of them start crying. Someone hit someone, don't know if it was cause of the game. I made them turn the game off. They ranged ages 5-11 i think.

Reply:Works cited is basically a references page. Unless there is a format you were told to use by your professor, just type your references. Although in research methods class they probably want you to do something off the wall. Seeing as that is what the entire class is about

I do a lot of reading of industry magazines, newspapers, online sites, and press releases.

Once I have an inkling of an idea, I dig deeper in that related field, then I have 6-7 people I pitch ideas at as I sketch out ideas and what not on the whiteboard.

The course is only offered in the Spring, and the workload is so incredible that I have to take that course by itself (no other courses that semester). The transferability of courses generally is determined by the college that is giving you the degree. Sometimes there are what are called articulated agreements with other institutions, which means that colleges have agreed in advance to accept certain courses. Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely that your university would have a master's level research course articulation agreement. For one reason, most programs want to be sure that you are trained by their standards, and are unlikely to approve in advance other courses.

This leaves the option of explaining to the program director that you would like to take X course at another university. You would provide the catalog description of the course and possibly even a syllabus, and the director would decide if you can substitute it.

Because research methods courses typically are among the most difficult, I am sure that the faculty are wary about students going elsewhere to substitute such a course.

So, you can try the substitution route, but be prepared to present a compelling reason for you taking it elsewhere AND for it being a comparable course.

Reply:Well, back when I took a similar course we did three things. One, everyone in the class acted as guinea pigs for everyone else. Two, our psych department offered bonus points for people who took part in research projects. Three, we just asked complete strangers a la Unicef and Amnesty International volunteers on the street. Failing those you can also set up your survey on a free online site and get people to fill it out that way.

You could ask users of Yahoo Answers if they would be interested. What I would be concerned with is not having my email address spread to other people.

Reply:My parents are both priests. They told me that exorcism is not sanctioned by Anglicans. However in the catholic church exorcism needs to be approved at Vatican level. I asked my mum to exorcise my car (as it appears to be a magnet for random large livestock and rednecks) and this is the answer I got. I was joking, but I got a quick lesson in exorcism. There are a few confirmed cases of successful exorcisms, however most these days are written off to mental illness. Schizophrenia mostly. Also many people die in the process of exorcism, hence the few successes.

There are several criteria that must be filled to qualify for an exorcism, but i can't remember most of them. They're quite different from the movie "The Exorcist".

I am currently writing my proposal for my disstertation and I am planning on gathering my data by creating a website therefore allowing a widespread response.

My initial reasoning behind this was that the sample size will be larger and more culturally diverse. Is there a piece of research that criticises condensed samples?

I think gathering your data by website is actually worse because you can't check for computer error or the off-chance that someone might hack into the system. It definitely is not an approved method by any scientific journals used by people in the research business.

I dont know what sample you are targeting. Perhaps you should consider the composition of the internet in terms of age, sex, social class etc before you preceed.

You might be restricting your sample by goin with a website. Its an availbality method, its also not very pro-active. Ive taken a sociological survey online before, but they also had an offline sample. Maybe you should consider doing both an online and offline survey.

I'm about to teach a bunch of 6th graders how to write a research report. I always hated what I felt were unnecessary evils---turning in note cards and outlines, when I didn't actually use or need them to organize my thoughts. I'm trying to gather different methods of researching and organizing thoughts that REAL people use. Any ideas would be great!

Back when I was in elementary school, back when we still lived in caves and dinosaurs still roamed the earth, we had to learn the old fashioned method of doing research you have mentioned.

I didn't think I would ever need it, but I remember my teachers telling us that one day we would need all that useless crap they were teaching up. Like any other normal kid, I didn't believe them, and we even heard the same story from our teachers in high school.

Then, it happened...I went and got older. I couldn't believe it when I went back to school, because I hated school so much. But this time it was different, it was a subject that I was interested and I didn't have to be there. Suddenly, I was having to use a lot of those things that I never thought I would ever have to use. If those teachers were around I bet they would have been saying, "I told you so!"

The funny thing is it didn't stop there, because I even needed to use the research skills that I had learned in elementry school, when I decided to open my own business.

Then, I needed them again about 15 years or so later, when I closed my store and decided to go back to school in pursuit of another career.

These days I do most of my research online, but every once in a while I still go to the library to do some research. Plus, I also have my own library of computer books, which fill 3 book cases and cover several different operating systems, different programs, and diferent programming languages.

I think, kids still need to be taught the basics, even if it is old school. However, they can also be taught to use the new technology too. You just have to keep in mind all your students may not all have access to a computer at home.

By the way, I'm not quite that old...I'm only 47!

Reply:Basically, you can research using various search engines in the Internet like Google, Yahoo, etc. However, there's an easier way to minimise the number of results searched.

You can use signs in your search. Like if you want to specifically look for two or more words ... use a "+" (plus sign). Example, let say you want to look for significance of chlorine in water. You can put "significance" + "chlorine" + "water". That will filtrate the search, making it more accurate.

Another code would be searching a topic with a specific file format (like doc, xls, ppt, etc). You can add in the word "filetype" to your search. Example, say you want to find cats in pdf format. You type "cats filetype:pdf". So, the Internet will only show those about cats in pdf document only.

In organising thoughts, you can use mind-mapping which a comprehensive yet non-detailed way. It'll might be better if the mind-map can have pictures relating to the topic discussed.

Well the police have a couple of methods to test a person for drunk driving. The main ones you probably already know are the "walk the line" where a person has to walk in a straight line. After that the policeman usually shines a light in the subjects eyes. He also has you follow the pen with your eyes ect. Now for the more science based method. Well that would be the breathalyzer machine. It has a white tube attached to it and it measure a reading of the alcohol content in people. (Man I am too much of a cop show fan).

Another think I gathered from watching a Court TV show one day is that they can test for things like a Cocaine addiction from a hair sample where they take a strand of hair and test it.

Another way that drug testing is done is by gathering a urine sample (uck).

All the factors, experience, position, training are factored in and regressed, and then you test whether or not there is a significant difference caused by being female vs. male.

I wish to start testing the stock market waters because I know being a young investor can be beneficial.

At this point, I'm only slightly familiar with 'volume', the three types of stocks (penny, growth, blue chip), and the two general methods of making money (dividends and stock prices rising).

But everything else -- especially detailed researching is extremely foreign to me. I'm tempted to just take internet advice, but I know that is not the most secure way to decide where to place my money.

Yet besides reading opinion articles, I don't know which pieces of information about the company to search for, and furthermore, I have no idea about how to put these pieces of information together to form a comprehensive opinion about a stock.

Any tips about researching stocks -- especially how company history etc-- plays into the mix are welcome.

How do i successfully research stocks for myself?
I hate to bring you the bad news but, it is very hard to SUCCESSFULLY research stocks by yourself. Unless you have a degree in finance; like I do. The best thing you can do is to invest your money in a DIVERSIFIED PORTFOLIO. Don't try to buy one stock because you've heard some news of it and it seemed interesting, or if the stock was recently upgraded by big name investment banking firms like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, or Bear Sterns.

The fact of the matter is that it is VERY RISKY to do that. You can lose a lot of money that way. It's too risky and not worth it. Imagine how you would feel if you invested $5000 in a stock and then it drops down to $2500 in a week.

Best thing to do is to build a portfolio of stocks (using several industries) which are diversified and carry a very low risk. There should be at least 14 stocks in your portfolio. Ideally, there should be 30, but not many people can have enough money to buy 30 different stocks.

However, if you really want to learn how to research stocks, then I suggest studying applied equity valuation methods such as the EP or the DCF models.

Most articles will have to links to companies, from there you can check out their financials which start out greek, but make sense after awhile. You can set up practice portfolios on yahoo and tract stock performance to see if you have what it takes, and it is better than learing the hard way.

In every industry there are winners, so find something you like, and focus on that area. You will probably know more about that industry, and have a better Idea of where the next moves will be.

Reply:There are a lot of books that will tell you about investing. You might start at your library or go out to Amazon and check out what they have. If you open an account with Fidelity, they have a lot of research material on companies. A great deal more than TD Ameritrade for example.

There is the option of investing in mutual funds. That way you do not need to do so much research. You just have to determine which mutual funds are good and the universe is much smaller. You can buy mutual funds directly from the fund company or many through a stock broker such as Fidelity or TD Ameritrade. Some you can even buy like stocks.

But first things first. Get a couple of books and begin reading on investing in stocks. There is even a "Investing for Dummies" book and it is highly thought of.

Advantages:

- quick, easy to collect and analyze, annonymous, participants are more likely to answer honestly,

Disadvantages:

- results can be skewed depending on the wording of the questions

- a broad sample needs to be taken in order to get good results representing the entire population

- questions cant be too personal or participants wont answer honestly

- questions cant be too specific or participants might not relate

.....You want the setting to be natural because otherwise subjects will perceive it as an artificial situation, which would give you bad results.

You want lots of experimental control because otherwise there would be too many other variables that could make it very hard if not impossible to interpret the results realistically.

The best and most overlooked way to improve classroom education of any kind is to introduce the use of boardgames. I have taught for over ten years all over the world, and only when I use boardgames do students voluntarily insist on extending their classes for two, three, even four hours. Not only that but they then show the most rapid improvement.

What are some typical foods and cooking methods of hawaiian island/pacific regions?
These are traditional/ancient cooking styles of old Hawai`i. Many of these methods were used through out the Pacific.

"Kalua" means baking in an imu, an underground oven. Meats, fish and vegetables were kalua in an imu.

The imu was made by digging a hole big enough to hold a large quantity of food. Once the hole was dug, it was usually turned into a permanent imu, and used repeatedly.

"Ko’ala” is a method of broiling meat, fish, or fowl on hot coals. Raw or dried fish is delicious when cooked this way. Wrapping meat in ti leaves first is not necessary.

"Kunu” is similar to ko’ala. However greater care is taken in preparing the fish so that it is unchanged and undamaged while being evenly cooked. The fish was turned often with the hand or a stick. It was an art to serve fish that looked untouched, and Hawaiians took great pride in that.

"Pulehu” a familiar term to describe broiling meat and fish, is often used incorrectly. PuIehu (heaped ashes) is broiling vegetables, i.e. ‘uala, (sweet potatoes) ‘ulu, (breadfruit) or bananas in the hot embers. These vegetables were broiled with their skins to protect the flesh from burning.

"Palaha”, (flattened out) term used for broiling flattened meat, i.e. beef, pork, venison on hot coals.

"Olala”, is broiling food by holding it above the coals, and turning frequently until all sides were heated. Dried fish did not need actual cooking, merely a little heating.

"Lawalu”, is fish or meat Wrapped in ti leaves and broiled on coals.

All of these methods were used when cooking outdoors or whenever the quantity of food was too small for an imu.

"Hakui”, is a method of steaming fish, meat vegetables with small pohaku 'eho, (red hot stones an inch wide). The foods are sealed in an ‘umeke (calabash) with a tight fitting lid and water added to keep in the steam. Sometimes alternate layers of pohaku ‘eho and food were placed in the ‘umeke with a little water.

"Puholo”, is steaming with several pohaku ‘eho. They are placed in the body of a fowl, and then in an ‘umeke (calabash) with a tight fitting lid to keep in the steam. Hakui and puholo are similiar.

Traditional food items are pork, chicken, fish, shellfish, mollusks, taro, breadfruit, bananas, coconut, sea weed, small limes, sweet potato, mulberries, a small type of plum, sugar cane and mountain apples. There are probably others, but it is hard to remember what was brought in to the islands, like mangoes, pineapples, and macadamia nuts, that are thought of as Hawaiian.

Taro is a large tuber that can be cooked and eaten as mush, or roasted.

Pit cooking is where a pit is dug, a fire is built in the pit and when the fire turns to ash and coals all the food is place wrapped in leaves in the pit and covered. Usually the food roasted is pig and a variety of vegetables. It is allowed to roast on the coals for a long time HOURS and HOURS. Then it is uncovered and eaten.

I read a really interesting research study and I particularly liked their format better known as "Method". The way they described how they went about the experiment and what they did to get their results would work perfect with what I would like to experiment/research. I would like to do my own research study using the same type of method, but I'm worried that if I do this, this may be considered plagiarism. Does anyone know??

Plagiarism is taking someone elses words or ideas and not acknowledging the source. Using an existing format is merely a recognized method of arranging your research paper. This format is common to research papers as it provides a logical and recognizable way of communicating your entire project. This is not Plagiarism. Now if your just replaced only the details and left the text this would be a problem. When in doubt, you can give credit to the originator and stay out of possible trouble.

However, I would ask one of your research mentors or maybe one of the more experienced researches just to make sure. In these situations you don't want to take chances, since plagiarism is a serious offense in academia.

For example, I used the Maximum Likelihood algorithm from the R package. This is a small part of my research, in an effort to find which techniques work best for my data and some things I try I will not include in my final program. So if I go into all the details, with equations etc of every single method I try and fail will it not be too much irrelevant information? Could I just give a few lines of description of how the algorithm works without going into too much detail?

It's really up to you. It depends on who you're presenting the thesis to. Some professors will let you slide on the details and others won't. I would suggest you include it just to be on the safe side.

I've always wanted dreads but now that I'm doing some research it seems there are lots of ways to make dreads. I'd like some nice thick ones but not with the neglect method. Do all the different ways to make dreads give different looks to them?

As long as you don't use sh*t in them, it'll pretty much all turn out the same. Everyone tells you to use wax and gel and crap, NEVER DO IT!!! So many companies do this, especially with the wax, to scam these kids into thinking that it's how you "do" dreads. The truth is that you don't "do" dreads. Dreads come in time. Backcombing is a very good alternative to neglect. Just get a friend to do it with a flea comb. After that, all the maintenance is to wash about weekly with non - residue shampoo. You could use baking soda like I do, though. Remember you only need to backcomb once to give the dreadlings a kick start. Anything done to them after that aside from ripping apart to keep them from joining is just hindering the process. And yes, dreading is a process.

Reply:Just type the name of your subject into the search box. Add a descriptive word after it. Example: Bipolar, symptoms; click: web search. Narrow it down. Bipolar, mild. Click Search. Bipolar, drugs/medicine. Pychopaths, killers. And so on and so forth. Try to boil it all down to the skinny. The fewer descriptive words you use the more results you tend to get. Good luck.

well, basically you get a sense of the persons beliesf, ideas, ect ect from the way they answer the questionnaires questions. its a good way of gathering broad information about something/someone cheaply and efficient. people are more likely to be more truthful in a questionnaire as well.....compared to if a person was asking them.

there are many sociology research methods. it all depends on what evidence you nare wanting to produce. think about what it is your trying to achieve then choose the best method to help you achieve your aim.

for example, if you need a statistical answer you would need to do quantitative research, but if you need to explain and give views, use qualitative research method.

- Low response rates

- Difficult to ask a lot of questions as this could cause respondent fatigue

So which is the 'methodology' and which is the 'method of data collection' or have I not stated it.

Also, is it possible for a researcher to do both in one research project?...eg. both field observation and interview.

Methodology means what KIND of research is being conducted. For instance, is it a qualitative, quantitative, or a multi-method study? Or, are you manipulating any variables or just observing some phenomena? The method of data collection would be HOW are you getting your data? Are you doing interviews, giving questionnaires/surveys, etc. etc. So in your example, the METHODOLOGY of research would probably be an observational and qualitative type study, and since nothing is being manipulated, it is not an experimental study. The METHOD of data collection would be field notes, and interviews. And yes, you can definitely do both together... I hope this helps!
