Qualitative research methods are "interpretive approaches" which use words to describe or argue the interpretation of social action. Discourses are written works on specific topics, that is, descriptive/analytical arguements on a subject. Discourses require in depth analysis and interpretation that may be impossible to define quantitatively (numerically). A discourse is an opinion on a subject, opinions cannot be numerically measured.
