What are the differences and similarities of indices and scales?

What are the differences and similarities of indices and scales in research methods?

What are the differences and similarities of indices and scales?
generally speaking, scales are aids for assessment, indices are how those values are reported.

going deeper....

indices can either be

- a list of known terms or

- a number or formula expressing some property, ratio, etc., of something indicated (index of growth; index of intelligence).

in most research, then, an index isn't like a yardstick. it's more like a glossary or a formula/number.

scales, by contrast, are used to either weigh things or provide a metric against which to make evaluations.

depending on the usage of the word scale and index, those are the most common differences.
