Try corporate governance. It is an absolute minefield of sociological dilemmas. You'l also enjoy yourself while researching it.

Hey - are you teaching and planning to use this on your students, or a student yourself doing research? Either way, don't be afraid of qual. Ups to you for your interest in something which will definitely change the way you look at your teaching and decision-making. If you have access to ERIC a quick term search will give you plenty. User-friendly pieces, like:'Toward a "Formula for Success"--Using Oral Histories To Help Students Succeed When Everything Seems To Be Working against Them.' How relevant is stratification in understanding crime from a sociological perspective?

Its a tutorial question in advanced statistics and research methods in criminology.

How relevant is stratification in understanding crime from a sociological perspective?
If you mean to imply that based on your social class you more or less likely to commit crimes, then I have some things I wish to throw out there for debate and consideration. First of all, people of different status may commit different "kinds" of crimes, but people of all status commit crimes. An aristocrate may not rob a 7-11 but may embezzle from his own company or cheat on his taxes, still basically stealing money. He may not gun down a rival in a drive by shooting, but he might hire a hit man on a business rival or a cheating wife. Also we might think about whether the environment we are raised in is an influence and to what extent. If this was the only influence then only lower class people raised in bad environments would commit crimes. This we know is not true. In fact a good number of these people turn out to be very productive members of society. I also would like to consider genetics in the relevancy mix. Look at the examples for instance where siblings (especially twins where there is no social difference in the family) turn out completely different. I think a good look at the prison population is in order. What is the one commonality amongst male prisoners? Abscence of a father. That is an avenue to be explored and seems like not too many (except for the extreme right) care to go there. If this theory holds water then why not do something to bring the issue to the surface and try to educate people on the value of a two parent intact family who overcomes their selfish immaturaty to bring up productive, well adjusted members of society? The relevancy of stratification in understanding crime might need a little study in and of itself and why the question was posed that way to begin with is very telling. I mean to say that asking that way is suggestive. I may not have offered an answer here but I didn't intend to. I merely hoped to offer some food for thought.
Reply:First of all, u shld define stratification in your ans and perhaps define crime as well.

crime normally is committed by unsatisfied pple who has a thing against the world. they feel society has short changed them or let them down. Hence, the desire to unleash their anger against the vast innocents. With stratification, we have class structures. individual opportunities are shaped by a society class structure, with sharply unequal resources and life chances. Many poeple in the lower class structure are marginalized by the elites, in the pursue of their own goals at the expenses of others. hence it may lead to the resentment caused by the marginalized and thus deviate from the norm and crime may be committed as a result.

Crime is a form of social deviance. Perhaps u shld study Merton's theory of structural strain, the conflict between culturally induced desires and the structure of opportunity. can try to do a little case study to illustrate.
Reply:Tony Blair said there's no point increasing the tax on the rich because they will find ways of getting around it. Kind of says it all really.
Reply:extremely -: the majority of crimes are committed by young male members of the lower economic groupings against members of the same economic groupings. These findings are valid in both multicultural societies and monoculture's. I typed your exact question into Yahoo search and got 2500 hits, try it.
Reply:You should define stratification as it relates to this question.

Stratification is very important to understanding crime from a statistical point of view. The relevance is dependent on the type of crime, but it is always important.
Reply:I think it is very relevent.

Define descriptive-normative research method?

or quote someone famous defining it :D

Define descriptive-normative research method?
The Descriptive approach which aims primarily at gathering knowledge (i.e. descriptions and explanations) about the object of study but does not wish to modify the object. The target is to find out how things are, or how they have been.

Normative approach tries to define how things should be, which means that it will be necessary to define also the subjective point of view that shall be used. This approach has sometimes been called "applied research."

Would u advise the advantage and disadvantage of research in observation method?

I most certainly could but I won't as I have had to intuit the meaning of your question you can by reading between the lines intuit my perfectly correct and complete but obscure answer.

Would u advise the advantage and disadvantage of research in observation method?
any chance you could ask the question in a way people could understand please?
Reply:Is observation your preferred (and best) method of research?

In order to remain objective it would be best if you had permission to use a video camera - you would then be able to take time to do your analysis on the actual events taking place rather than having to rely on memory or notes taken at the time.

A tape recorder is ok - ish, but a video would definitely be better as you would have a permanent record of what was taking place. You would then be able to transcript any dialogue taking place.

You didn't say what your field of research was, if it involves children - for teacher training etc - then you probably have an enhanced CRB, but you would still require permission because of ethical considerations.

You might be better off doing a combination of observation and interviewing. This has the advantage of giving you a two-pronged approach and the ability to compare what people say with what they actually do. However get some help from your tutor - it's what they get paid for, they've been through the process themselves and know the advantages and drawbacks of all types of research methodology. Good luck!

Can someone help me with a psychology research topic...Please?

I'm doing research methods in experimental psychology and I'm just not interested in it. I need the course though. I need to develop a research project and I can't think of one. Something needs to be consistent, manipulated and have a measurable outcome. Like, thinking through a specific task improves after listening to Beethoven. Task remains consistent and participants listen to Beethoven and some to other music and some in silence. Music changes. But that's out of the text...I need something easy a lay person can do.

There was another one measuring the effects of stress on memory in college students.

Please help...

Can someone help me with a psychology research topic...Please?
Hi - for a small research project in college, i gave people a list of words - some abstract and some that were concrete and had them study them for 3 minutes. Then, i had them write down as many as they could remember. The hypothesis is that people recall words/information better if it is concrete (table, chair, monkey) as opposed to abstract (large, fast, busy). Lots of research on it. Lots of implications, too. Good Luck!
Reply:Ok,how about memory: Do people remember better with pictures or with words? Make up flash cards with pictures, then flash cards with words, show them to your subjects, one after the other, then have them write down what cards they remember of the picture cards, and then of the word cards.

It seems to be the latest fad so it would be relevant.

The self-esteem of non-sexually active teens vs active teens?

It's out of control, so relevant.

Easier would be give a test of some nature to kids not diag'ed with ADD, kids that are and are on drugs for it, kids that are and take no drugs and measure the difference. You could do the same for the teens looking for a correlation between activeness and reading comprehension, for instance.
Reply:Why make research on what you barely know about. It's pure waste of time!

My MBA project topics is value versus growth in stock market. which methods used to do the project.?
You can easily learn about value vs. growth by going to any full service brokerage company and requesting brochures on that topic. You can also contact mutual funds that sell both value funds and growth funds; by ordering the prospectus of each (always free), you can read the "fine print" on what really makes one investment a value investment while another investments makes a growth investment. I'll briefly summarize for you... growth investments tend to be ideas that are showing a great deal of promise down the road to do well (think of them as plants... add water... watch the growth as time goes on). A value investment is quite different... it's an idea that seems to be at a current bargain price (think of it as poinsettias for sale after Christmas... it's a beautiful flower, but no one really wants it right now). To conduct a survey, why not directly contact stockbrokers and stock analysts and ask questions? Most will take out some time to help you work on your MBA project. Good luck.

Having trouble developing a research question ....can you help?

This is for a sociology class called research methods. We are to develop our own topic but I am having trouble finding a good topic for research. I failed this class last year waiting to long and then developing a bad question that I found later not to work out. Last semester I did how walmart contributes to poverty in communities. I have been following the washington post "Being a black man in America" and would love to do something with that but am having problems coming up w a question for that too! This proposal is due next tuesday and I have already been working on this since yesterday. What would a good question to kick off the research writing process?

Having trouble developing a research question ....can you help?
I suggest narrowing your topic to a specific aspect. What facet of "being a black man in America" are you interested in? Don't worry about narrowing your topic too far. Once you think it's too narrow, narrow it some more, and you've got it.

Good luck!

What is the best way to research your family history/geneology; can you do this without having to pay?

I know there are methods of doing this without paying sites for this information, and without having to resort to public records which are private. I do not want a ton of scheming internet sites to have to know my families history just because I had to enter it into their database to retrieve some info about my family. However, I would be willing to do so at a legitimate site; I would like to do my own research, if possible.

What is the best way to research your family history/geneology; can you do this without having to pay?
Someone asks a question like yours 1 - 4 times a day, sometimes in the Family category, sometimes in the Genealogy category, sometimes elsewhere:

Where can I find my family tree for free?

Does anyone know the {Surname} family?

What are good sites for ancestors / genealogy?

I paste this answer in. It is long and general. Not all the links and paragraphs will apply to everyone.

If you want to type in your name somewhere and get a 12-generation tree, skip the rest of this. I can show you where to dig, but you'll have to buy your own shovel and do the work yourself.

Buying a shovel: If you get serious you'll need a genealogy program. Trying to do family research without a genealogy program is like trying to write a novel with a pencil and yellow pad, instead of a word processor. I like Roots Magic. Family Tree Maker is the market leader. Both cost around $29. The Mormons will let you download PAF for free. It is clunky, but it is free. You can sometimes find old versions of FTM or Family Origins (FO is the predecessor of RM) in bargin bins at CostCo.

These may help get you started. They are large and free.

You won't find living people on any of the sites except the phone book one. You will have to find your grandparents' or great grandparents' birth dates and maiden names somewhere besides the Internet.

The free sites are supported by advertising, just like TV. You can't watch the Super Bowl without seeing a beer commercial, and you can't surf for dead relatives without seeing an Ancestry advertisement. Don't complain about advertisements. They bring you the "free" sites. There's no such thing as a free lunch.

Since you are in favor of free data, give some thought to helping others. You can look up obituaries in your town for people who post requests for them on bulletin boards, for instance. Another of my pages tells you how to ask for and look up obits:

Examples of research questions about how neighbourhood watch reduces fear of crime?

I have to present a research proposal about this, and i'm totally lost :( I can write the proposal and justifications and research instrument stuff, I just can't come up with the actual question I wan't to ask, or how it's best to do it. We've been told it's got to include some qualitative research methods, but I'm just *so* lost. I can't get my head around it - i'm just getting more and more confused. How am I supposed to get an accurate measurement of fear of crime without using a closed question? Like, I could ask people to rate on a scale of 1-5 how afraid they are of burglary, and it's a scale I can work with and get results from, but with qualitative research, how can I do this and get a measure accross area's with and without Neighbourhood watch? Please help me, I don't even care if I have to change my methods or even start all over, I just need some serious guidance here!

Examples of research questions about how neighbourhood watch reduces fear of crime?
i think you would have to do a questionnaire with questions like does your area have neighbourhood watch?(you would need to get a group of people who do and a group who dont to compare) then more questions like are you afraid of burglary like you said but even if it is yes and no answers its still qualitative data isnt it?it would be quantitative data if you asked on a scale of 1-10 how scared are you?

try GOOGLE SCHOLAR aswell, type in the title you have used here an it should come up with previous research that has been done on the subject! good luck! :-)
Reply:Can you call or email your teacher cause they are the one that gave the assignment. Maybe someone here will help you but you are smarter than me. calm down it will all work out.

Scholarly or scientific investigation or inquiry.

Research is often described as an active, diligent, and systematic process of inquiry aimed at discovering, interpreting and revising facts. This intellectual investigation produces a greater understanding of events, behaviors, or theories, and makes practical applications through laws and theories. The term research is also used to describe a collection of information about a particular subject, and is usually associated with science and the scientific method.

Do you support the funding of embryonic stem cell research?

There has been a lot of progress with adult stem cells but not much with embryonic. Should we funnel money for that research? Also, scientists discovered methods of creating embryonic stem cells without destroying human embryos...would you support this research?

Do you support the funding of embryonic stem cell research?
well..if I supported funding embryonic stem cell research, than I would also support finding methods to create them. Afterall, you have to study them, to replicate them. And yes, I support it. It made great advances in 1996 before the reserach was gagged by RTL. I remember, because my brother became a quadriplegic that year. I also am informed enough to know that abortions are NOT used in this research, and I also know that Bush had his daughters through a fertility clinic..the places that they destroy these fetuses if they are not used..either by the parents or research. So, the man who vetoed the legislation, did so knowing that he was destroying his OWN fetuses..and denying people access to a better quality of life
Reply:If a lot of reputable scientists think this type of research is extremely promising, who am I to say they are wrong? And the embryonic stem cells we are talking about are leftover embryos from fertility treatments. If they are not used for research, they will just be flushed down the toilet. Why would that be better?
Reply:I don't support the government funding of any Private Research!
Reply:as long as life in no stage is destroyed, i am all for it.
Reply:I assume you mean federal funding seeing as private funding of stem cell research is already perfectly legal and going on as we speak.

Adult stem cells seem vastly more promising at first glance. However, understand that we have worked with them for twice as long as embryonic stem cells. If there is a possibility that we may be able to cure people of debilitating diseases, I am all for it.
Reply:stem cells in any way they can do it and now there are many ways of achieving it
Reply:Yes, certainly. Though I'm not much for government funding of many things, scientific research is one area where I support it.
Reply:Not public funding.

I don't think we should be doing it at all.
Reply:from umbilical cords .. yes ...

from an embryo created for that purpose .. no ..
Reply:Sounds like you've fallen into the neo-conservative semantics trap. Adding "embryonic" to the stem cell debate makes it sound like we're cutting up babies. The truth is that the stem cells are harvested before any differentiation has begun, just days into a pregnancy, and when all cells are stem cells, and they're no more than a very tiny lump.

Yes, I support funding of stem cell research. Evidence to date suggests it may offer solutions to many problems.
Reply:Absolutely, WITHOUT hesitation
Reply:Uncle Sam doesn't need to pay for it.
Reply:Yes, it's a very valid area to study because the potential gains could be enormous.

I don't support any govt funding for anything as a general rule -- but I strongly encourage universities and companies and people to contribute to such research.
Reply:Apparently it's OK to kill already-developed civilians in other countries.

But Heaven forbid we kill a handful of cells that don't have the ability to think or reason or acknowledge their surroundings...even if it is for the betterment of human medicine.

Do you people ever listen to yourselves when you talk? You must just drift in and out.
Reply:I'm all for the research, even though they haven't come up with a single thing to date, but no federal funding! Unless it is in the form of a very low interest loan to be paid back at a later date.These research companies get federal monies to develop a product, put it on the market at very high prices, make millions of dollars off of it and the tax payers never get their money back.

Keep the government out of it. It has to stay private.
Reply:Sure, but people have put a lot of stock on a field of research that hasn't been tested yet. It's going to be really disappointing if we find out that it wasn't as useful as we'd suspected.
Reply:NO! I do not agree, its messing with mother nature and this is wrong in my book.
Reply:Yes.
Reply:Let the millionaires like Micheal J. Fox fund it ! Even better - force the corporations and gov't to quit dosing us with toxins and carcinogens and the illnesses will dwindle away.
Reply:yes for sure.

we would be able to treat so many diseases, such as parkinson's, cancer, and any spinal cord injuries.

I understand the whole pro-life view of embryos being human, and needing protection. But when they're already dead, and the choices comes between just throwing the embryo out, or using it to save countless people's lives....well that's a non-brainer.
Reply:not at all
Reply:Yes , but I dont believe that we should mess with mother nature TOO much.
Reply:I have nothing against any privately funded research. I am against taxpayer funded research of any kind.
Reply:I say try it all.. I mean.. it's like taking the trash in your can and using it to better your life... we're talking about cells doomed to be incinerated being used to save life.

I have no problem with that.
Reply:Personally, anytime the word embryo is mentioned, I think "unborn child".

No to Embryonic research, yes to Adult and the use of Cord blood research.
Reply:Of course! Sometimes we have to explore a couple different avenues of research to find the answers we're looking for. I wouldn't support creating embryos just for the purpose of destroying them, but I don't think that's really an issue because there are so many ways around that.
Reply:I do not support the funding of any stem cell research because the Federal government should not be in the business of funding any medical research. The Federal government has a spending problem and it should be reigned in.
Reply:won't 'kill' anyone will it!? i dig puns
Reply:Yes, from umbilical cords. Not from embryonic stem cells. What diseases have we found the cures for from stell cell research? I'm just curious. Everyone says it's so successful, but I never hear the true success stories. Anyone?
Reply:i support any research of illnesses infact i think they have the cure but are too cheap to put it out there...
Reply:No, as it has not been proven that we will get any progress from them, so it is a waste of money.

Suppose you wanted to determine whether the use of cell phones causes car accidents. Discuss the major limitations and benefits of using the following research methods: naturalistic observation, survey, case study, and experiment.

Suppose you wanted to determine whether the use of cell phones causes car accidents. Discuss the major limitat
naturalistic observation only allows you to observe yourself and those immediately around you, as you can't easily watch people talk on cell phones and have accidents - it's not a large enough sample to be representative.

surveys run the risk of subject dishonesty, as self-reports almost always do, and again have the issue of generating a large enough sample to be statistically representative.

case study runs the risk of assuming that correlation equals causation (someone had an accident while talking on a cell phone, therefore the cell phone caused the accident... never you mind that the accident consisted of the guy hitting a moose while driving through Vermont in a snowstorm...)

experiment runs the risk of harming the subject (by causing someone a car accident!) and therefore is probably unethical.
Reply:best way to research is install a remote camera. and monitor a intersection. or you could investigate accidents and try to find out if their phone was in a conversation at the time of the crash.

Qualitative and quantitative research?

What are the differences between qualitative and quantitative research methods

Qualitative and quantitative research?
Quantitative research is, essentially, counting things. For example, the number of Yes answers vs. No answers.

Qualitative research is much more open ended. It involves responses asked to open-ended questions where participants lead the discussion. For example, "what did you like best about..."

Check out these wikipedia articles for more:

Quantitative: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantitativ...

If you were going to design a study investigating the relationship between alcohol and violence?

Which of these research methods would you choose and why? case study, naturalistic observation, correlational research, survey research, or the experimental method

What would be the relative strengths and weaknesses of this study? What ethical considerations must be taken into account while undertaking this study?

If you were going to design a study investigating the relationship between alcohol and violence?
The experimental method is definitely out. It is not exactly ethical to feed someone alcohol and then provoke them to become violent. Naturalistic observation would be very difficult - how would one monitor the amount of alcohol consumed or how does one follow up with whether someone acted out or not?

I would think that case studies and perhaps survey research would be the most appropriate methods. The strengths would include ethical compliance, a viable research method and perhaps the compilation of verifiable data. The weaknesses would include distortion in self report often associated with surveys and the sometimes unreliability of case studies that may or may not be an accurate reflection of a particular subject. Case studies may also be clouded with the notion that the subject's circumstances may be too specialized and may not accurately reflect the general population.

Reply:There is no "right" answer. Your instructor (this is an intro to psych test question?) wants you to demonstrate you can define the methods by showing an understanding of the pros/cons of each method.

Make a short bullet list of worthy points from your textbook of each of the methods and you should be able to work through this question in your own words. As long as you back it up and stay consistent with your answer, it is grade A. I'd point you toward corelational research but answer what you feel most confident with if you really had to do it.

Are there any pet/child safe methods of keeping cockroaches out of my home?

I have a seroius cockroach phobia and I live alone with my four Yorkie terriers and a small bird. I've done research on varoius types of home insecticides and have found none that are safe for use around children and animals. Please help!

Are there any pet/child safe methods of keeping cockroaches out of my home?
i have never seen roach they only go most of the time where it is very dirty ,
Reply:The plastic roach hotels containing bait that is taken back to their "lair" that can be stuck inside cabinets and on high surfaces are the closest to safe as you will get assuming your dogs won't eat the roaches. It's not a good idea to put them on the floor my cats were attracted to them and wanted to chew on them. You have to clean really well not leave crumbs, seal all food, don't leave pet food out after they eat put it away in sealed containers. Check the rubber gasket seals to your microwave and fridge clean them well, Clean, Clean, Clean! Use liquid soap, keep the toothpaste capped. seal your toothbrush. You have to starve them. Overall personally, if you can I'd move and don't take any boxes from the house you'll take them with you shake out and wash all your clothes before you move. I have lived in a few apartments where there were infestations. They were there before I got there but I didn't know it. In one instance they inhabited and ruined a brand new answering machine. In 2 places I lived I didn't permit the landlord to fumigate. After one experience with roached. I fumigated before I moved in and cleaned the place thoroughly. I had to keep the kitchen spotless and the roaches stayed with my dirtier neighbors. In future places I learned to check the cabinets and floor board for dead roaches during the viewing of the apartment. If I saw any bugs I wouldn't rent the apartment. They usually miss at least a roach leg, droppings, or the eggs during cleaning of the apartment.I don't know how I ever put up with it when I did. I've attached some articles you might find helpful.
Reply:I researched this problem a few years back, my old apt had roaches (eeeew). Try this, it works:

Roaches HATE catnip. Get a bag of catnip, and soak it in hot water for a little bit (like making tea). Strain it, and then get an old spray bottle (from something used prior that is non-harmful to pets, of course, or a new one). Spray the 'tea' by the door, under the fridge, by anywhere that you think they enter. It completely worked for me, and they never came back!

PS the longer the catnip steeps, the better, but don't pour all of the mixture into the spray bottle, as the leaves of the catnip will clog it - you can also keep the 'tea' in the fridge and use a paper towel to apply it where you need it.

I do not have cancer, but I do have to be watched carefully and I am young. It is one of the leading causes of deaths among women. At The American Cancer Society, you can join, donate, participate, volunteer in your community and so much more. You can also check with your local oncologist or hospitals to help or volunteer. It is great that you want to help. Make sure that you keep in touch with your own health as well. It is very important.

Diary research?

What social science research has used diaries as a form of qualitative research methods?

Any answers or good links most appreciated.

Thanks

Diary research?
I found this link which was interesting - I'm sure everyone else including you could find this (see below)

However, your question also made me think about contemporary 'diary' keeping in the area of anti social behaviour. I don't know if its any use to you but if there is a problem with anti social behaviour in an area, diary sheets are issued to those affected to detail dates, times and events so that the authorities can follow up on those incidents. This is a form of social science research using diaries but may not be what you are looking for. Interesting question. Many thanks...

Are there any particular set of methods we have to choose from?

If no, I'd do the double-blind control experiment thing using the "human zoo" approach - i.e., after having selected appropriate candidates and appropriate control candidates, having them stay in a "Big Brother" type of house, but without them knowing which rooms are monitored and which rooms are not. Depending on how I'm able to fenagle to fine-print, I may have a few rooms they think are monitored (but are not), and a few rooms they think aren't monitored (but are).

In addition to this would be multible MBTI-type personality surveys, the kind so extensively non-sensical to the untrained mind as to be virtually unfalsifiable by them, filled out by all participants. Using several different types should permit detection of those who are checking boxes at random and those who are seriously trying to fill them out. Those who are just doing random checkboxing, they can be told that their duplicity has been detected and asked to do it again, or perhaps - depending on the aim of the experiment - told that the results of their tests were phenomenally interesting and asked to repeat a few.

I love the "human zoo" approach, it is most impressive. :-)
Reply:ethnographic. It's like you have to be there to experience.
Reply:And...?

Send out a quiz to see if people own up to being or knowing of some-one who is.
Reply:I would gather the research on the pathological lying that goes on with psychologists and the quality of their assessments.

For example, I was told by a psychologist that my daughter was "autistic" and needed "special school and therapy" (Read: lots of money). My sister (who is a teacher) visited my three year old daughter and told me that this was total bunk. Within 10 minutes, my sister had my daughter talking about the ducks they saw on TV. Then, on Thanksgiving, my sister bought my daughter little pilgrim people that my daughter played with all day and even had the little wax people kissing each other. At Christmas, my sister bought my daughter a flight attendant, plane and pilot set from playmobil. My daughter put absolutely all the dolls, animals, etc. in the plane to go to Italy with my family.

The well-paid "Psychologist" said that my daughter did not "do well" in creative play.

I said, "Thank you, doctor" and I promptly "mainstreamed" (his word, not mine) my daughter into another school. She is now doing GREAT at six, speaking two languages and telling me when I need to wear my glasses and need to "chill out."

So the recommendation is to study all the pathological liars that exist in professions who are trying to make more money.

I know my child is not the only case.

What are approved methods of selling your soul or conjuring demons?

Relax, this is for a research project in a cultural class in a unit dealing with the occult. I don't want to hear any Christians coming in lecturing me about "Why would you give your soul to the Prince of Darkness?" or anything stupid like that. I just want an objective answer with lots of explanations, links, and diagrams if possible. Whatever anyone can provide from generally accepted rituals to cultural variation is appreciated.

What are approved methods of selling your soul or conjuring demons?
Purely for the sake of speculation, The most common method of selling your soul per se would involve signing a 'Faustian Pact'. Trading your soul for a good or service named at the time of the contract signing. The contract would be signed with the blood of the mortal.

Again I reiterate this is speculation, I do not belive in demonic beings nor would I condone using a Faustian pact if they did exsist.
Reply:How the Soul works

http://blog.360.yahoo.com/jame... Report Abuse

Reply:The term "Selling your soul" is just a metaphorical statement. That is in consonance to the popular image of a God ( creator/ Positive Forces /Love) and anti-God (Satan/ Destroyer/ Dark forces/ Wrath) competing to win the soul of a mortal man cascaded down from time immemorial.- Which may not necessarily be true. One can not sell his soul as it all originally belongs to the Creator. It is how this created man tries to harmonize the three aspect of his being : body, spirit and soul that determines his success as a living creature. A human being succeeding to integrate the soul with his spirit attains higher spiritual freedom ( "nous", as described in the ancient Gnostic philosophies, hidden teachings of Christ) and once this achieved, the body becomes a blest temple of the spirit , devoid of sickness, disharmonies , even. It is when a human being (soul) , after given a series of lives on earth ( incarnations and re-incarnations) and hasn't mastered to fuse soul and spirit in a space of love, haven't even desired seek his own spiritual upliftment, may, during the final judgment, loses his soul and can not be counted a worthy to have continuing soul existence in the "many mansions " of the universe. That can be termed as that being has "sold his soul" to the anti- GOD. He is not worthy to belong to the All-Loving bank of perfected souls. Conjuring Demons is a posible activity. There are secret invocations, incantatons that needed to be recited along with methodical rituals. There are diagrams, numerical orders, coloured candles, animal parts, scent fragrance and foul smelling stuff, other art works. Asking guidance from a Guardian Angel is the same activity as conjuring demons. Both serves the purpose of man. One in Love the other is bestowing ill- feelings to the other ( even if you are asking a demon to cause another to fall in love with you). The ancient Egyptians, including Moses , have used special written symbols, and order of words and names of spiritual beings to make manifests the "essence" of either light beings or dark energies / sinister energies to follow their commands. Conjurer must have pure thoughts, and needs lots of practice, memorize a lot of powerful prayers. Both needs faith yet to a different purpose.

Once a Guardian Angel is summoned , you may forget to cancel your request of his/her manifesting and it will do you no harm. However, if after conjuring demons and you forget to sent him.her back in his/her own world, it could be disastrous as there could be disruptions in your life/ somebody elses / peace/ harmony/ manifestations of disease/ artificial plagues , including weather aberration , natural calalmities and effects may be global.

Suggest no one does this even by experiment -- suffice it to say that conjuring has always its effects even if it is not actually felt instantly.
Reply:All you need to do is get a job in the City or politics. The rest will follow.

How would this look for a letter of recommendation?

Can I ask a professor who I had for a class called Qualitative Sociology Research Methods to write me a letter of recommendation even if the Masters degree I'm applying to is not Sociology? We learned alot of research techniques that I think would be useful for my Master's thesis.

Yes / No / It Depends

How would this look for a letter of recommendation?
yes, of course. any college professor would be qualified to write you a letter of recomandaition.
Reply:The information you saw online is correct.

But recommendations from professors in what are called "allied fields" are also valuable. As you learned online, at least 2 of 3 of your letters should be from professors in your intended field of specialization. A third from your sociology professor would be absolutely appropriate.
Reply:Of course, he is only recommending you for a class and has no need to be within the discipline to do that. Good luck.

Can anybody suggest an alternative research method to rosenhan's study?

something other than a field experiment as rosenhan used this method. what effects would the alternative method have on the results?

Can anybody suggest an alternative research method to rosenhan's study?
It would be very difficult to replicate Rosenhan's study since it was designed specifically to measure the effect of context on the diagnosis/retention of supposed mentally ill persons. That accounts for many of the findings that otherwise normal behaviors were interpreted in a fashion consistent with residence in such a facility, rather than as they might have been if the person exhibiting them were in some other location. The fact that the subjects had been admitted to a mental health facility is too germane to the research to remove it.
Reply:The study presupposes that a firm diagnosis of psychiatric illness can be made prior to institionalization since it presupposes any of the inpatients to be actually mentally ill. Yet the means by which pseudopatients gain entry to such institutions tends to dispute such a presupposition. How then are we to suppose that some "actually" mentally ill petients were mistakenly thought to be imposters? I would think a diagnosis of patients and pseudopatients on a one to one basis with several psychiatrists might reveal a more accurate indication of the extent to which labelling might affect diagnosis.

How to find sponsor companies to fund my research on quick(5min)charge EV batteries ,by electrolyte change?

Dear Sir,

Green cars are practical solutions to green house gas reductions in the future .

But we need to overcome long lasting problems of electrical cars either by technology or by proper planning .

I am a 42 years old energitic chemical engineer, oil and gas and energy specialist , and I am really worried about tremendous devestation of our environment by CO2 accumulation.

In fact we are making money by oil exploration, oil refining , and enjoy driving petrol cars .

we try to raise our children with higher income of oil engineers but we are producing CO2 to destroy the earth in future by global warming and by tornados of climate changes.

I believe the key to solve the milage problem of electric cars and HP requirements of them is proper type of heavy duty batteries with quick recharge time with liquid change.

By this method 300 miles and 3 to 4 minute charging time can be achieved in the fuel stations .....

Any supporting institute you know to provide fund to complete my research to make these batteries?

Also "multiple electric car leasing" or MECL is a way to use large no, of electric cars in large cities , for taxi service .

Any one knows of supporting institutes in one large city to provide fund to complete my research to realize this ?

How to find sponsor companies to fund my research on quick(5min)charge EV batteries ,by electrolyte change?
You are jogging my memory -- someone back in the 1980s had a similar scheme, to fast-charge EV batteries by exchanging electrolyte. I forget what the battery chemistry was, but I recall the word "chloride".

-

Your competition today would be the new fast-charging batteries from Altairnano and EESTOR.

The Altairnano batteries are already making an appearance on the market, in the Phoenix electric pickup truck. They charge in ten minutes, and have a 250,000 mile lifespan. Link:

Should fast food adverts be allowed to be advertised during young children's shows?

For my Media A-Level final exam I have been asked to conduct various research methods which will help me gain information on my research question, "Should fast food adverts be allowed to be advertised during young children's shows?” One of my research methods is this forum. So I would appreciate it if you can answer my question.

Should fast food adverts be allowed to be advertised during young children's shows?
Not really. Just like with the old issue of toys being directly advertised at kids before the law forced advertising companies to become a bit more "subtle" in their appeals, these adverts not only enforce kids to behave like spoilt brats and pile pressure onto parents, but they also encourage them to ask for the wrong things.
Reply:I don't think it would even matter. I mean this america. it's a free country. Look at it this way. What if you worked for the fast food industry and you had to put food on the table for your family, and all of a sudden the gov. Doesn't let you advertise on tv.
Reply:I presume these children have parents who actually control what they eat, so sure. It's a good opportunity for the kids to learn to distinguish fact from hype.

I'm also not big on allowing the government to decide what I may and may not hear.
Reply:NO

Because this is why we have fat people roaming around.Well some of them as they have disorders.But is'nt the world going through a over weight crisis.

Cheers
Reply:Here in New Zealand we are placing an official ban on fast food/junk food advertising on TV during hours in which children are highly likely to be watching TV, eg. after school or in the mornings on weekends. This may become effective, although slightly, because media plays a big part in peoples' lives. If children are constantly exposed to advertisements showing people eating chips, lollies, soft drinks, etc. they think that it's perfectly OK. What they don't know is the reality, that you could eventually become obese, diabetic and become overweight, etc. and suffer from these consequences in later life.

So I'd say "No", it shouldn't be allowed that fast or junk food ads are on TV because the media influences peoples' lives in such a big way. And worse, if they put the ads on the exact time that they KNOW their target audience is watching....well we all know what will most likely happen.

Good luck with your exam!
Reply:No, fast food adverts shouldn't be advertised during young children's shows as it will lead to obesity.

With the current trend of global warming research, are we headed for another Dark Age of superstition?

Religion and politics is based on belief. Science, unlike religion, does not depend on belief but on healthy skepticism.

In the current global warming debate, Inquisition like behavior occurs to stifle the scientific process and bury views that do not agree with an "authority sanctioned" view point, with the Church replaced by the IPCC. Remember what happened to Galileo and Bruno? This has happened in the past and people were called heretics and in another age, witches. Today they may be called incorrectly "religious conservatives." The scientist being attacked could very well be an evironmentalist and liberal. It is unfair to label someone as something they are not just because they are trying to do honest research.

Science is based on the scientific method and not on consenses. For any hypothesis, there is going to be an antithesis. We went through the Enlightenment to free ourselves from the Church, we don't need a new Church of IPCC to replace it.

With the current trend of global warming research, are we headed for another Dark Age of superstition?

Reply:Yes I Believe So !!!
Reply:actually just because something that is stated is not accepted by scientific community, does not make it religion or fact. it is somewhere between the two.

what usually happens is scientists try to disprove a hypothesis with experimentation. when many of them do, it becomes acceptible to dismiss the hypothesis.

what you see currently is a large number of scientists that through their own knowledge, believe one way, and one loan scientist trying to debunk the majority. more often than not, it is pointed out that that loan scientists overlooked several key factors in order to debunk the hypothesis.

it happens all of the time, for both good and bad intentions, but sooner or later that scientist is discredited, and left telling people how he has a PhD, while he is putting their fries into their bag. but of course some do start selling books on how to survive a nuclear war.
Reply:Quite the opposite.
Reply:%26lt;%26lt;Inquisition like behavior occurs to stifle the scientific process and bury views that do not agree with an "authority sanctioned" view point, with the Church replaced by the IPCC.%26gt;%26gt;

close, but no cigar. the ipcc is the science. the stifling body are those paid by the oil industry. the science said that there was a 99% chance that global warming was caused by our burning of coal and oil. the energy industry interfered with the science, and made them reduce to 90%.

%26lt;%26lt;are we headed for another Dark Age of superstition?%26gt;%26gt;

only so long as the energy industry mouthpiece is in power. a year and a half, it would seem.

EDIT: I looked at the Danish site. It says that there are natural and human causes. They are looking specifically at the natural causes. Nothing in the site indicates that the human causes are not the main cause of global warming.

Having a rather slow commection, i'm not about to finish someone's youtube. However, i do have some thoughts:

- title "the great global warming swindle" implies propoganda, not science.

- who starts the presentation? TIm Ball. Who is that? %26lt;%26lt;Timothy Francis Ball, Ph.D., is a retired university professor and global warming skeptic. He heads the Natural Resources Stewardship Project and formerly headed the activist organization Friends of Science both of which have been criticised as Astroturf organizations funded by energy industries.%26gt;%26gt; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_F._...

i did note yet another reference to "the 1500 scientists" compiled by the OISM -- who has absolutely no credibility at all.

%26lt;%26lt;Science is based on the scientific method and not on consenses.%26gt;%26gt; That's true. Unfortunately, the consensus has been brought in because politicians are censoring the science. Is that what you meant by "another Dark Age of superstition?"

%26lt;%26lt;Inquisition like behavior occurs to stifle the scientific process and bury views that do not agree with an "authority sanctioned" view point%26gt;%26gt;

THAT IS ABSOLUTELY TRUE. Ask James Hansen. He disagreed with the "authority sanctioned view point" and was ordered not to give public interviews and not to attend conferences and give presentations.

There are 2 parts to the IPCC. The science section. And the political section. The science section describes the science. The political section tells the science section what they are allowed to publish.

If there is a "Dark Age of superstition" looming, it's the political response to the problem of global warming.

I'm awaiting the arrival of "The Skeptical Environmentalist" in the mail, by Bjorn Lomborg. He is an environmentalist and claims that global warming is not happening. I'm interested to see why he thinks so.

"It is unfair to label someone as something they are not just because they are trying to do honest research."

This is exactly the case with a lot of the issues at present. I have been long-devoted to the thought that agents like Greenpeace were there to do good. I also until recently felt a certain warm feeling towards Green lobbyists, such as Ralph Nader (reason why we now have seatbelts), but then again putting pressure on people (scientists, government officials) that are trying to do their job (govern and/or mandate by logcial or scientific basis) to the best of their ability.

I also believe that the number one reason why scientists get into the business of science is to help people, not for profits.

"Science has been demoted to belief. Confusion is becoming more than rampant."

I'm happy to see some others out there feel this way. It can be leveled on both sides (or more than two sides?). Each side has their working orders.

"The real voice of intolerance comes from the nature nazi's. Their agenda is right in step with global socialism to punish the U.S. and other developed nations to put us on the same footing with third world countries."

I am getting this overall feeling the more I read, though I would love to see why this person thinks this.

I have reading and reading on this topic more and more - it was true, I saw the Gore movie a few years back and thought that settled it: Global Warming is happening. I had other things on my mind, as is with most of the public - this is why I think the media should do a better job at reporting or uncovering the truth. I actually think there should be some sort of off-hand newscrew that likes to de-bunk popular beliefs and so forth. These are the kinds of people that will keep the Dark Ages at bay.
Reply:It is ironic how the far left political movement in this country always accuses George W. Bush of creating a hoax known as the war on terror and treating it as a bumper sticker to push his agenda.

Because that seems to be exactly what anti-human nazi's are doing with global warming as their bumper sticker. If anyone even dares to question the high priest, Algore, they are accused of being Exxon's lapdog or an evil capitalist bent on exploiting the planet into an apocalyptic catastrophe. The real voice of intolerance comes from the nature nazi's. Their agenda is right in step with global socialism to punish the U.S. and other developed nations to put us on the same footing with third world countries, who happen to be serious violators of the Kyoto treaty. It's not really difficult to see Algore's ulterior motive here, when considering he is a stakeholder in "carbon credit" products.

Having said that, I think blaming humans for global climate change is a crock.
Reply:Inquisition-like behavior? Name one person burned at the stake. Name one person tortured. Can't? Didn't think so. Just more blowhard rhetoric.

And, although I'm sure you didn't learn this at Bible Camp, consensus is part of the scientific method, and a very important part. Thanks also for admitting by implication that scientific consensus on GW and its anthropogenic causes does exist.
Reply:Funny, the media states that science is like American Idol and whoever gets the most votes is the "winner".

Mankind's role in the warming (or cooling) on Earth is religion to many people. I think scientists have a better chance of proving manbearpig is the missing link than we do that man has anything to do with global warming. Then again, I only read facts about this issue and do not rely on faulty science or bogus computer models.

What is the easiest upper division psychology course?

I am taking a rather large load this coming spring and I would like to know which psychology course is the easiest (work wise and concept/understandable).

These are the choices:

Research Methods in Psychology

Physiological Psychology

Personality

Conceptual Development

Abnormal Child Psychology

Human Sexuality

Alcohol, Drugs and Behavior

Health Psychology

Psychology of Stereotype and Prejudice

PS: I am not a Psychology major

What is the easiest upper division psychology course?
From the list you've given I'd day Human Sexuality. Things that interest us are easier to study than things that are more obscure. Especially for a non-major.

If you can, ask around and see who the professors are. I have found that a class may be easier just because of who is teaching it, not so much because of the topic. Also, what is your degree in? Maybe one class would be more helpful than others in your future career. One last suggestion, unless you are planning to be a researcher of some sort, avoid research methods in pscyh because although conducting experiments can be interesting, the material is very dry and possible too detailed for someone not interested in psych.

Which of these methods works the best to heal bruises?

I did some research and i came up with these methods to help heal bruises quickly:

massaging the bruise

vinegar

alternating from hot to cold

arnica gel/lotion

vitamin K lotion

if you know which of them works and what works the best or if you know any other methods.

Thanks in advance :)

Which of these methods works the best to heal bruises?
vitamin C works wonders to help heal and prevent (ORANGE JUICE!) and hot/cold.
Reply:Thinking about what a bruise is should give you your answer. A bruise is basically a cut on the inside. The blood pools and forms a bruise and depending on how much blood spilled depends on how long it will last. The cold/ hot works if you apply it as soon as you are hurt. The cold slows the bleeding and then the hot helps speed the recovery. You wouldn't keep alternating. No lotion will work. Messaging may lesson the look by spreading the blood. The bruise appears lighter. Vinegar is a great cleaning agent and has many benifits but removing bruises is not one of them.
Reply:An aspirin or equi every four hours if needed for pain. Clean the area and dry thoroughly. Medicate with antiseptic if needed. Get a good night's rest. Time and rest is best.
Reply:arnica gel doesnt work at all

How do I compute a Sampling Distribution of the Sample Proportion with a Normal Distribution on my TI-83 Plus?

Here is the specific question:

Suppose that 32% of all U.S. voters believe that the president is doing a good job. If we take a random sample of n=250 voters, what is the probability that fewer than 30% of the voters in the sample believe that the president is doing a good job?

This is not for an exam, I am taking a Research %26amp; Methods class where I am over my head in Statistics and need help.

Thanks much,

Brad

How do I compute a Sampling Distribution of the Sample Proportion with a Normal Distribution on my TI-83 Plus?
This is a bionomial distribution. They either believe that he is doing a good job or not.

2ND VARS (DISTR)

Selection option B - binomcdf(

Then type:

bionomialcdf(250,0.32,0.3*250)

= .2726

= 27.3%

We now have in this country a new religion made up of political followers that will believe anything that their favorite politician or party member has to say without even questioning where the source came from,and anyone that questions the source will be branded as a nazi witch,no different than the old days of the inquisition
Reply:Ok, man of many erroneous opinions. Religion is based on belief that has yet to be disproved scientifically. Politics is a fact. Science is in fact, fact when proven, theory until then. If scientists were skeptical about finding a cure for breast cancer I would be dead. They are hopeful, dedicated, unsung hero's in a world that needs them. I see here you are passionate, but, you lack logic. You are all over the place. What do you want to debate? Everything? As far as global warming goes, I choose to believe that we will find a way t stop it thru using alternative fuels. If not, hundreds of years down the road after I and all my grandchildren are gone, there will be a hot time in the old town tonight. Um, are you related to Rosie O'Donnell? I don't mean by blood but by action? You seem to me to need to climb to Mt Everest or some other death defying feat to bring you back to reality. I wish you luck.
Reply:We may be headed for a dark ages if there is devestation on the Earth enough to destroy the governments. Evironmental change as i understand it starts of slow, gains momentum and then wham hits you all at once. Though all at once once on a geological scale may be within a thousand years. We are definitly screwing up our atmosphere and who knows whether it will be 25, 100, or 1000 years before there are worldwide reprocusions.
Reply:Bob, I think a big chunk of this is partly to blame on religious conservatives.

If you'll look over the years they have politicized EVERYTHING!

We have these politicians who believe that the bible is a history and science book and they speak in sound bites. This is not helpful to the general populace.

You could also go as far as to say that the American public in general is not intelligent enough to understand that our climate is affected by many different factors.

The extremist view is to say that Global warming is happening and is caused by man-period or that it's junk science and is not happening at all.

Facts are the Earth is getting warmer. Ice caps are melting, and our man-made pollutants are not helping our environment at all.

Now the big question is what is causing all this?

Sunspots have a direct impact on our climate, as well as many other cycles that our planet goes through (precession, changing of magnetic polarity, etc.).

This doesn't mean that have no culpability in the warming of the globe, but it does mean we need to have serious discussion on what is actually happening.

What are your favorite summer foods?

Please tell me anything about your favorite summertime foods! I am asking this question for a research methods class. Thanks!

What are your favorite summer foods?
Watermelon, Cherries, Berries (of any kind).

Grilled Foods: Veggies, Chicken, etc.

Grilled Fresh Pineapple is one of my favorite things ever.

Snowballs - not snow cones - snowballs, like you can only get in Louisiana.
Reply:ice-cream

:)
Reply:anything cold, I think:

Gazpacho, watermelon out of the fridge, ice cream, salads (cold ones, but could be with meat anyway), any fresh vegetables, herbs, cucumbers in summer salads are great!

Cold mango on it's own or in salad is great.

Anything low maintenance is great - as if the summer is hot, you feel really lazy, therefore don't want to spend loads of time cooking, especially if more heat is involved in cooking
Reply:Some of the summer foods I like are watermelons and grilled steak. I also like T-Bones with A1 sause on them. Some desserts would be a Sundae, or ice cream with a lot of whip cream on top. I also like to eat Skittles when I'm playing my video games. Hope that helped.
Reply:Grilled Baby Back Ribs, Corn on the cob, roasted marshmellows, Grilled Steak, Watermelon, Canteloupe. Hope that helps.
Reply:cumber sandwich chicken salad sandwich fresh fruit
Reply:Grilled veggies and grilled BBQ chicken, crab legs, smoothies, honeydew melon.
Reply:Any type of meat off the grill,ice cream,slushies,iced tea,watermelon,cantelope,funnel cake from a carnival,potato salad and lemonade
Reply:I love grilled steaks and a salad in the summer. also watermelon or honeydew
Reply:watermelon!!! lemonade!!!! anything spring like
Reply:Brazilian food.. is really good, dude!

Tropical food *-*

hmmmmm
Reply:During the Summer, I lay off fatty foods like Pizza and Spaghetti because they tend to make you sluggish and things. My favorite Summer Foods are........

~Chilled Watermelon(Family Fave.)

~Summer Salads

~Water of Course lol

~BBQ Ribs

~Ice Cold Lemonade(Fresh Made)
Reply:I love fruit salad - watermelon, honeydew, cantalope, strawberries, grapes, kiwi, pineapple, and bananas. It is nice and refreshing on a hot day! I always make my own - it's cheaper that way and it keeps longer.

I also like corn on the cob - just because it's a symbol of summer.

I also like veggie kebobs. They are light, healthy and filling all at the same time.
Reply:hot dogs
Reply:I dont eat much during the summer.I usually drink lemonade.But i sometimes eat salat,fruit(anything that isnt worm).
Reply:Steak, corn on the cob and potato salad.

Is there a relationship between alcohol and violence?

This is for research methods but is there a person you know who becomes violent when they drink, or more violent when they drink? Feel free to elaborate if you wish.

Is there a relationship between alcohol and violence?
When a person becomes aggitated and prone to agression reason and cognitive processing comes into play that allows them to rationalize the situation and either find a situational reason for the distressing act of another or to help them work through their thought process and avoid the agressive behavior, in effect preventing the thinking through of the consequences of their actions.

Alcohol inhibits this "Higher order thinking" and prevents them from working through these processes that would relieve their aggression prone behavior. Couple that wtih released inhibitions and an ability to blame their actions on something else "I was drunk so it doesn't count.' You remove all sense, reason and accountability leading to aggressive behavior.
Reply:Oh yes. Take it from one who's been a victim. I've always witnessed many others who have had a bad relationship with alcohol and many who still do.
Reply:yeah my dad -_- the poison, as i call it, makes one do things they wish not 2 do, but sometimes they are truthful about things. And since my dad gets drunk almost every day... -_-
Reply:yes, i know a few like that. I think alcohol is just a good excuse to lower someone's guards (i.e. inhibitions and control) and let their inner-selves come out.
Reply:Absolutely! Go to the Dept of Justice, statistics and look for the amount of crimes committed when people drink. It's rare that people will fight when they are straight. Get a bit of liquor in them and watch what happens.

Research is a human activity based on intellectual investigation and aimed at discovering, interpreting, and revising human knowledge on different aspects of the world. Research can use the scientific method, but need not do so.

Scientific research relies on the application of scientific methods based on scientific paradigm. This research provides scientific information and theories for the explanation of the nature and properties of humans and the whole Universe. It makes practical applications possible.

Scientific research is funded by public authorities, by charitable organisations and by private groups, including many companies.

The term research is also used to describe an entire collection of information about a particular subject.

Scientific research is the subject of different classifications.

Basic research

Basic research (also called fundamental or pure research) has as its primary objective the advancement of knowledge and the theoretical understanding of the relations among variables (see statistics). It is exploratory and often driven by the researcher’s curiosity, interest, or hunch. It is conducted without any practical end in mind, although it may have unexpected results pointing to practical applications. The terms “basic” or “fundamental” indicate that, through theory generation, basic research provides the foundation for further, sometimes applied research. As there is no guarantee of short-term practical gain, researchers may find it difficult to obtain funding for basic research. Research is a subset of invention.

Examples of questions asked in basic research:

* Does string theory provide physics with a grand unification theory?

* Which aspects of genomes explain organismal complexity?

* Is it possible to prove or disprove Goldbach's conjecture? (i.e. that every even integer greater than 2 can be written as the sum of two, not necessarily distinct primes)

Traditionally, basic research was considered as an activity that preceded applied research, which in turn preceded development into practical applications. Recently, these distinctions have become much less clear-cut, and it is sometimes the case that all stages will intermix. This is particularly the case in fields such as biotechnology and electronics, where fundamental discoveries may be made alongside work intended to develop new products, and in areas where public and private sector partners collaborate in order to develop greater insight into key areas of interest. For this reason, some now prefer the term frontier research.

Research methods

The goal of the research process is to produce new knowledge, which takes three main forms:

* Exploratory research, which structures and identifies new problems

* Constructive research, which develops solutions to a problem

* Empirical research, which tests the feasibility of a solution using empirical evidence

As discussed in the previous section, these forms are not clear-cut.

Research can also fall into two distinct types:

* Primary research

* Secondary research

Research methods used by scholars:

* Action research

* Cartography

* Case study

* Classification

* Experience and intuition

* Experiments

* Interviews

* Mathematical models

* Participant observation

* Simulation

* Statistical analysis

* Statistical surveys

* Content or Textual Analysis

* Ethnography

Research is often conducted using the hourglass model. The hourglass model starts with a broad spectrum for research, focusing in on the required information through the methodology of the project (like the neck of the hourglass), then expands the research in the form of discussion and results.

Research process

Generally, research is understood to follow a certain structural process. Though step order may vary depending on the subject matter and researcher, the following steps are usually part of most formal research, both basic and applied:

* Formation of the topic

* Hypothesis

* Conceptual definitions

* Operational definitions

* Gathering of data

* Analysis of data

* Conclusion, revising of hypothesis

A common misunderstanding is that by this method a hypothesis can be proven. Generally a hypothesis is used to make predictions that can be tested by observing the outcome of an experiment. If the outcome is inconsistent with the hypothesis, then the hypothesis is rejected. However, if the outcome is consistent with the hypothesis, the experiment is said to support the hypothesis. This careful language is used because researchers recognize that alternative hypotheses may also be consistent with the observations. In this sense, a hypothesis can never be proven, but rather only supported by surviving rounds of scientific testing and, eventually, becoming widely thought of as true (or better, predictive), but this is not the same as it having been proven.

A useful hypothesis allows prediction and within the accuracy of observation of the time, the prediction will be verified. As the accuracy of observation improves with time, the hypothesis may no longer provide an accurate prediction. In this case a new hypothesis will arise to challenge the old, and to the extent that the new hypothesis makes more accurate predictions than the old, the new will supplant it.

Publishing

Academic publishing describes a system that is necessary in order for academic scholars to peer review the work and make it available for a wider audience. The 'system', which is probably disorganised enough not to merit the title, varies widely by field, and is also always changing, if often slowly. Most academic work is published in journal article or book form. In publishing, STM publishing is an abbreviation for academic publications in science, technology, and medicine.

Most established academic fields have their own journals and other outlets for publication, though many academic journals are somewhat interdisciplinary, and publish work from several distinct fields or subfields. The kinds of publications that are accepted as contributions of knowledge or research vary greatly between fields.

Academic publishing is undergoing major changes, emerging from the transition from the print to the electronic format. Business models are different in the electronic environment. Since about the early 1990s, licensing of electronic resources, particularly journals, has been very common. Presently, a major trend, particularly with respect to scholarly journals, is open access. There are two main forms of open access: open access publishing, in which the articles or the whole journal is freely available from the time of publication, and self-archiving, where the author makes a copy of their own work freely available on the web.

Research funding

Most funding for scientific research comes from two major sources, corporations (through research and development departments) and government (primarily through universities and in some cases through military contractors). Many senior researchers (such as group leaders) spend more than a trivial amount of their time applying for grants for research funds. These grants are necessary not only for researchers to carry out their research, but also as a source of merit. Some faculty positions require that the holder has received grants from certain institutions, such as the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). Government-sponsored grants (e.g. from the NIH, the National Health Service in Britain or any of the European research councils) generally have a high status.

Etymology

The word research derives from the French recherche, from rechercher, to search closely where "chercher" means "to search" (see French language); its literal meaning is 'to investigate thoroughly'.
