What are some possible methods of interstellar travel?

Hey, I'm doing research on an informative speech about interstellar travel, what are some methods people have thought about that may work?





Someone had told me that warmholes would work, if we can get it stable enough.





Or Phasing.

What are some possible methods of interstellar travel?
Neither wormholes or phasing are fact.


Any interstellar voyage will, of necessity, be very very long trips.Possibly hundreds of years as there is no way that we can approach any significant fraction of the speed of light.


A couple of ideas are ' photon sails' powered by a BIG laser on the Moon or solar radiation.


The Ion drive which is a device that turns a reaction mass to a plasma and expels small amounts of plasma at a very high velocity.


The Bussard Ram Jet which uses a large magnetic field as a scoop to collect interstellar hydrogen which is compressed and used to generate a fusion burn to provide thrust.
Reply:On a more practical scale, build a large enough spaceship (like earth) and take it on a journey which could last thousands of years if not more.

Reply:Forget wormholes. They are a science fiction invention to allow interstellar plots. The don't exist, at least not in any useful form.


Other possibilities exist without postulating almost magical science.





Generation ships, taking many thousands of years to reach their targets, probably built into asteroids to ameliorate the effect of radiation due to impact with molecules or small particles in space. Keeping a functioning ecology in something that small over that period of time is somewhat chancy. That Earth II experiment screwed up after a couple of weeks.





Ships pretty much as slow but the crew is put under suspended animation. Of course "suspended animation" is another science fiction term to allow interstellar travel, but it is feasible. Maybe. The trouble is building a ship that would continue to work for thousands of years without breaking down and killing everyone on board while they were asleep. My nice espresso machine just broke down after 7 or 8 years.





Ships containing embryos that could be born at the destination and reared by humanoid robots. Ships could be smaller since life support not so much of an issue.





Ships containing NO biological components, but recordings of genetic patterns that could somehow be converted into embryos and raised by robots. And again, you have to be able to build machines and circuits that LAST.





Forget travel altogether and create your own computer universe where the rules are what YOU want them to be. No more annoying speed limits due to the speed of light. Your intelligence and perhaps everyone elses could be downloaded into the infinitely large memory. You could be as immortal as you wished to be and "travel" anywhere in your virtual universe. It would be considerably cheaper than real interstellar travel, open to anyone, and perhaps even possible.
