What is alternative research method?

what are the alternative research methods? their definition, usage, advantages and disadvantages?

What is alternative research method?
There are numerous research methods, and the best method for a particular piece of research will depend on what your research question is. If you are attempting to determine a causal relationship (ie whether doing something - such as giving a particular drug - brings about a change), then you will need to use an experimental design such as a randomised controlled trial. If you are researching a particular phenomena, however, then non-experimental methods will be used.

Research methods can generally be categorised as qualitative or quantitative. Qualitative research deals with a topic in greater detail, but will include fewer subjects (eg interviewing people regarding the reasons behind their career choice). Quantitative methods deal with figures, and are more likely to look at issues such as how much better boys do in exams than girls.

A good book to read, which gives a basic introduction to the main research methods is:

Denscombe, M. (2003) The Good Research Guide for small-scale social research projects. Second Edition. Buckingham: Open University Press.
